Genre Pros And Cons – Comedies

Comedy is a genre of film that revolves around humouring the audience. There are many pros and cons for the genre which I will be taking into account to determine the chosen genre for my main coursework task.

Pros:

• Comedies do not tend to be set in unrealistic settings and the lighting does not usually have to be particularly specific so expenses for the mise-en-scene will be relatively low.
• Audiences can generally empathise with characters in conventional comedies as they tend to come from a similar background. This also makes the casting for my actors a lot easier as I will not require any type of specific person.

Cons:

• Humour obviously plays a large role in comedies and catering to every sense of humour in the audience within the opening sequence would prove to be extremely difficult.
• Comedy is a difficult genre to convey within the two minutes of the opening sequence since dialogue and narrative play an extensive role in.the genre. 

Genre Pros And Cons – Horror

Horror movies are also one of the most popular genres and one of the more readily achievable ones as opposed to action or comedy.

Pros:

• Jump scares are relatively easy to achieve and these play a large role in many horrors.
• In terms of budget, any props used in horror movies can be found cheap and there is not much of a tendency to use special effects or CGI unlike action movies.
• Locations vary but there is not a high demand for anywhere eccentric; they can be filmed from the comfort of your own home.

Cons:

• Controlling the lighting accurately will be difficult; it mustn’t be so dark to the point where the audience cannot see what is actually happening but it needs to be dark enough to create an eerie, tense atmosphere.
• Choice of audio is essential when editing together the opening scenes of a horror film as it is almost as important as the actual footage and this can be extremely difficult to execute correctly to provoke the intended reactions from the audience.

Genre Pros And Cons – Action

Action films have a lot of pros and good things which would result in a successful production which I will be taking into consideration when deliberating my final genre along with all the possible cons of the genre.

Pros:

• They attract a wide audience through their adrenaline fuelled action sequences.
• There is no set conventional storyline for action films allowing the freedom and creativity over what happens to the director.
• When produced to high standard that fully immerses the audience, the experience can be extremely entertaining.

Cons:

• Due to budget restraints, the special effects: explosions, guns and CGI, will not be achievable and these tend to play a large role in most successful action movies.
• For an action film to be successful, good actors are required and generally adult actors to play the important roles so due to the lack of adult participants, with enough free time to film, at my disposal, I will not be able to achieve the results I would want from an action film.
• The opening sequence to short action film with no budget will not raise any enigma codes in the short space of time. It will be more likely to result in the audience questioning the type of genre that they are actually watching.
